Marianne Karoliina Sihvonen (Válbor Máhtte Teresá Riittá Mariánne by her Sámi name) is a Finnish-Sámi performer-composer,

renowned for her exploration of diverse creative practices and her dedication to contemporary music. She is committed to amplifying the voices of living composers, having premiered works by a new generation of composers, including Sunleif Rasmussen, Ylva Fred, Ville Raasakka, and Lauri Supponen. Marianne's own compositions are an evocative blend of improvisation on various flutes, vocals and electronic elements, deeply influenced by her Finnish and Sámi heritage as well as her family's experiences with colonialism.

A passionate collaborator, Marianne co-creates with flutist Molly Påhlsson as part of the innovative duo MoMa, where they merge improvisation with electronics to push the boundaries of flute performance. Their groundbreaking work was recognized with a scholarship for interpretation at the 2023 Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music. Marianne is also an advocate for environmental awareness through her work with the flute and guitar duo HΛV, alongside Faroese guitarist Alvi Joensen, bringing attention to ecological issues across the Nordic region.

Her artistic journey has taken her across Northern Europe, with performances at prestigious venues such as Båstad Chamber Music Festival and Malmö Live in Sweden, Moderne Mandag series and Aarhus Chamber Music Festival in Denmark, INN:PUST Festival in Norway, Nordic House in the Faroe Islands, The Art of Improvisation Festival in Hamburg, Nepal Music Center in Kathmandu, Sibelius Museum and the Alexander Theatre in Finland.

Marianne recently completed a Master’s in Contemporary Performance and Composition (CoPeCo) through a joint program at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon and the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. She is currently pursuing a flute soloist diploma at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. Additionally, Marianne was selected as one of ten international Density Fellows for Claire Chase’s Density 2036 project, where she receives mentorship from Chase in performing works from the groundbreaking Density series.

Beyond her artistic practice, Marianne is also an active cultural organizer. She works as an executive director for Sonkajärvi Soi Festival and Lapland Chamber Music Festival and producer for the 2025 edition of Ung Nordisk Musik Festival in Uusimaa, Finland.
